Mood, Depression, and the Gut-Brain Connection
Depression and anxiety are closely tied to IBD fatigue, and they can persist when the gut is quiet. An underactive thyroid produces fatigue that closely resembles IBD exhaustion, so a thyroid-stimulating hormone test is reasonable when tiredness lingers. Nutrient shortfalls are also common because inflammation, diet changes, and surgery can impair absorption. In one IBD cohort, deficiency rates reached 25 percent for vitamin B12, 26 percent for vitamin D, and 12.5 percent for folate. Persistent tiredness in remission is a signal worth investigating rather than something to simply accept, and the people who get answers are usually the ones who arrive with a clear, dated picture of how their energy behaves over time.
